Thanks Doug,

The Holga has an aperture fixed at f/13 or so. It claims it has two f/8 and f/11 but it is fixed at f/13 unless you modify it. I use bulb mode as without bulb you are limited to a fixed shutter speed of around 1/100th.

Anyway the Efke Infrared Film is quite slow. It has a rated box speed of 100 but that is without filtration. The film is based off of old Adox formulas that were orthochromatic and as such have lots of sensitivity to blue light so when you use a red filter or an IR filter like the Hoya R72 that I use with it you really cut down the effective speed. I would rate the film with a R72 filter as a 1.5 or 3iso. I guesstimate exposures for the most part but go for 1 second at full sun and 4-8 seconds in open cloudy times. In the shade or in deep woods I often go for a minute or more. The film has pretty strange reciprocity failure and handles overexposure quite well so I always err on the side of over exposure unless there is going to be a lot white in the image at which times it gets tricky because it is quite easy to blow out the highlights.

Often times I will also bracket for exposure and take 3-4 exposures once again erring on the side of over exposure.

At $10 a roll and only getting 12 shots per roll when you shoot it as 6x6 im medium format is aint cheap but it sure is a lot of fun. I have now shot around 120 rolls of it and can pretty much guess exposure and be pretty close most of the time. The efke film is quite a different beast than Kodak's HIE but it has become my favorite film. Even if HIE was still around and you could get it in 120 I would still shoot the Efke.
