How do you define, "Portrait"?

This is for the ones that come by and look, but don't generally post along with regular posters...

With it so difficult to define the various genres in art, how do you define what is or what is not a "portrait"? This month's alt contest, "Portrait" got me thinking about it and I wondered what others thought as well.
